Behind the Scenes is a mini-series that presents a collection of personal artifacts from my siblings and me, exploring how the toys we were drawn to may have shaped both our strengths and our challenges. Using a mixed-media approach—including collaged letters, photographs, currency, toy figures, and acrylic paint—this series invites viewers to reflect on their own childhood favorites and consider how those early experiences helped shape who they are today.
One of the collaged sculptures in the series features Barbie, Batman, and Beetlejuice, placed in front of photos of me and my siblings. Each character represents one of us: Barbie symbolizes me, Batman represents my brother, and Beetlejuice stands in for my sister.
In the composition, Batman is playfully drawing a mustache on his own photo, adding a sense of humor and lighthearted rebellion. Beetlejuice is surrounded by cash, reflecting my sister’s energetic and ambitious personality. Meanwhile, Barbie is shown adjusting a spotlight on a billboard featuring a photo of us as children—representing my role in illuminating and connecting our shared stories.
For me, Barbie has always stood for the ability to juggle many roles and interests. Her versatility inspired me to believe I didn’t have to choose just one path. That influence led me to adopt a “jack of all trades” mindset—embracing creativity, ambition, and the freedom to explore different directions in life.
